Powerful but pricey and a bit heavy
Performance and the 1080p 120Hz screen are great, and 1TB storage out of the box is appreciated. It's heavier than I expected and $799 is a lot. If you can tolerate Windows' quirks on a handheld, it's the fastest option around.

Finally a handheld with real battery life
The 80Wh battery is the headline for me. I get nearly double the runtime of the old Ally and the extra RAM helps demanding games. Running Game Pass on the go is fantastic. Windows is still annoying to navigate with the sticks, but performance is the best I've had in a handheld.

Buyer questions

Questions & answers

Real questions from buyers, answered by owners and the ComparZone team.

From the community

QHow long does the battery last?
It varies widely by game and power setting. Light or 2D games can last several hours, while demanding AAA titles at high settings may run roughly 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The 80Wh battery is a big improvement over the original Ally's 40Wh.
QCan I expand the storage?
Yes. It uses a user-replaceable M.2 2280 NVMe SSD (1TB standard) and includes a microSD card slot, which Asus redesigned to be more reliable than the original Ally's.

Frequently asked

How is the ROG Ally X different from the original ROG Ally?
It keeps the Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip but adds a much larger 80Wh battery, 24GB of RAM (up from 16GB), a 1TB SSD, dual USB-C ports, better ergonomics and improved cooling. It is a refinement focused on battery life and usability rather than a new processor.
Does it run Steam and Game Pass?
Yes. It runs full Windows 11, so you can install Steam, Epic, Xbox/Game Pass, GOG and other storefronts, with broad game and anti-cheat compatibility that some Linux-based handhelds lack.
Is the Windows interface good on a handheld?
It works but is the weakest part of the experience. Asus's Armoury Crate front-end helps, yet Windows still feels less tailored to handheld use than the Steam Deck's SteamOS. Many owners tweak settings or add third-party launchers.
